Alltel announces City ID
Geek.com –Brian Osborne – May 23, 2007 –
Alltel announced it will be offering a new enhanced caller ID to Alltel wireless subscribers. The service will allow incoming calls to display the location calls are coming from for almost any landline or mobile phone in North America. The service will initially be available on the LG AX275 with plans to offer it on other Alltel phones in the future.
The service, City ID, will be offered as a free 7-day trial. As the service is rolled out later for other devices, a 15-day free trial will be offered. Those wishing to keep the City ID service after the initial trial will pay US$1.99 a month.
The service takes care of the annoying game of figuring out where a caller is calling from based on area code alone. The service is actually in the form of an application by Cequint. The application can identify over 15,000 cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Now, if you don’t know who’s calling, you will at least know where he or she is calling from.
