Alltel Launches Enhanced Caller ID

By Rhonda Wickham – WirelessWeek – May 22, 2007 – Fresh off news of its corporate buyout, Alltel Wireless announced another precedent with City ID service that will identify the location of incoming calls by displaying the city and state. Traditionally, wireless users only know the identity of callers they have put into their devices' address books. All other numbers are simply that, numbers without an origin.

Alltel's City ID matches any incoming phone number with the U.S.-based city and state where the number is "registered." The application displays the results along with the incoming number.

The operator is offering a free 7-day trial of City ID. As other devices are added, the company will expand that to a 15-day free trial. After the trial ends, the application is available for $1.99 per month. The City ID application is pre-installed on the LG AX275, and other phone models will be added in the future.

Seattle-based Cequint developed City ID for Alltel, and the application can identify more than 15,000 cities, towns and neighborhoods, providing users the identity of both local and long distance callers.
